About Parenting Coordination

The role of a Parenting Coordinator is to facilitate communication and cooperation between parents for the purpose of effectively co-parenting their children. A Parenting Coordinator's role includes facilitation, education and consultation and involves meeting with the parents to assist in dispute resolution using mediation skills. A Parenting Coordinator may offer professional advice and recommendations regarding the needs of children.

Dispute Resolution and Binding Decisions

The Parenting Coordinator may assist parents with any number of parenting issues related to the needs of the children, including adjustments parents may make to the parenting time schedule, selection of medical personnel or professionals, the choice of education and extracurricular activities for the children.

In addition, the PC has decision-making authority by means of a binding decision as governed by the Arbitration Act of Ontario.

The Parenting Coordinator makes every reasonable effort to assist the parents in resolving their disputes themselves. However when the parents, despite the Parenting Coordinator's best efforts, are unable to come to a resolution or are deadlocked, the Parenting Coordinator  in accordance with their scope of authority set out in the contract, makes a binding decision that decides the issue. The Parenting Coordinator always recognizes that the Courts in Ontario have the final authority and ultimate responsibility in relation to the best interests of the children.
